Getting my name out

I'm currently in a dilema to whether sending out a self promo pack to agencies is the best way of contacting them and getting noticed, or if a simple email and attached PDF is the way to go. We even did a module on self promotion, of which mine looking back at, is slighting on the embarrassing side. I think maybe if you get a great concept to show your creativity, personality, art direction skills, then its a much more appetising way to sell yourself.

But with thousands of graduates sending out useless bits of junk, do many agencies want to just see your book and not gimmicks. I remember seeing on WK's blog how Ida and Fabian got noticed, which is shown in a previous blog of mine.....Attaching a massive poster of themselves looking into the agency, which ultimately got them a placement and job. I have also been told of one team actually stalking a CD for a month, bit creepy.

So let me know of any good promo stories and example work, or if i should just to stick to my good old pdf's and phone calls.

Just get out there and see people. Your book wont be perfect so showing it to people will help it improve. A gimick has to be really good to work.

The best I heard was a team leaving a wallet in the toilet of TBWA when Beattie was there. They put their ads in it and some stuff saying it was his wallet, of course it got to him and he got them in. Of course it goes without saying you need good work to back up these gimicks or they're worthless.

We heard about that one too, and we managed to get in campaign magazine, That got a bit of attention but it mostly just got our names out there so when we do go and see people they say "oh yeah that was you two! how diid you manage that?" most gimicks are funny for the time but disappear fast and don't get you anywhere. Pisspoorenglish (link on my blog) stuck a huge crucifix in the front lawn of tbwa/bdh in manchester with his portfolio attached because its set in an old church. That got him a job but mostly through his work.

If you meet with these people you have the same chance of getting a placement as long as your book is good, whether you pulled a stunt or not. Many don't like gimicks, and a simple email will get you to see them.

invest the time in your portfolio, once that is uber good, then you can start thinking about a stunt, you always have to back it up. i think a promo idea is good, but only if its cracking.

Hi Idea Bakery- right back at ya. Cute blog! Are you by any chance after a copywriter? I'm looking for an AD, but only giving digital agencies a go.

Hope the link works. A stunt is a good way to get in, but it needs to be for a reason. I've heard of a few good ones and also some shockers. 1 creative team chucked a brick through a CDs window with images of themselves and contact details. They were arrested later on.
